Aion 2 Classes: Roles, Weapons & Which to Pick
Aion 2's eight launch classes explained: group role, main weapon, faction rules and how to choose before the permanent class lock.
Verified for versionglobal-launch
Aion 2 gives every character one permanent class choice, then asks you to learn a combat system where flight and altitude matter as much as gear. The global PC launch ships with eight classes, all available to both factions. This page explains what each one does, which weapon it uses, and how to choose without chasing a tier list that will be outdated next patch.
The eight launch classes
| Class | Group role | Main weapon | Pick it if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Templar | Main tank | Longsword and shield | To hold the front line and control pulls |
| Gladiator | Melee damage / off-tank | Greatsword | Big melee hits with some durability |
| Assassin | Melee burst damage | Dagger | Fast, positional kills |
| Ranger | Ranged physical damage | Bow | To kite and fight from distance |
| Sorcerer | Ranged magic damage | Spellbook | Straightforward ranged burst |
| Spiritmaster | Summoner | Orb | To manage a pet and spread pressure |
| Cleric | Healer | Mace | To keep a group alive |
| Chanter | Support / damage | Staff | Buffs, utility and flexible damage |
Every class is available to both Elyos and Asmodians. Gender does not lock you out of a class, so the choice is about role and playstyle, not faction cosmetics.
What the group actually needs
Aion 2's group content is built around the trinity plus support. The solo instance teaches your class, five-player parties cover the mid-tier, and ten-player groups need a composition that can survive mechanics rather than just stack damage.
- Tank: Templar is the dedicated main tank. If you like being the player who decides where the fight happens, this is the clearest pick.
- Healer: Cleric is the dedicated healer. Groups always need one, which makes it the safest social pick.
- Support: Chanter sits between damage and support. It is the class for players who like buffs and utility more than a fixed rotation.
- Melee damage: Gladiator and Assassin both want uptime. Gladiator is heavier and can absorb pressure; Assassin is faster and more punishable.
- Ranged damage: Ranger and Sorcerer are the two straightforward ranged picks. Ranger is physical and mobile; Sorcerer is magic and burst-oriented.
- Summoner: Spiritmaster adds a pet and spread pressure. It rewards players who like managing more than one thing at once.
A group without a tank or healer will feel the gap immediately. A group with four damage classes can still clear some content, but it has to play much cleaner.
How to choose in five minutes
- Pick the job you want in a group. Tank, healer, support or damage. This matters more than the class name.
- Choose melee or ranged. Melee classes have to manage positioning and altitude up close; ranged classes get a wider view of the fight.
- Decide whether you want a pet or a fixed rotation. Spiritmaster is the pet pick; Sorcerer and Ranger are more direct.
- Check the weapon fantasy. If you dislike greatswords or daggers, do not pick a class whose entire identity is built around one.
- Accept the lock. You cannot swap class on the same character, so choose the role you will still want after the story ends.
If you are completely undecided, Templar or Cleric is the safest group pick, while Sorcerer or Ranger is the easiest solo start. Assassin and Gladiator are the melee picks for players who already know they want close-range combat.
Melee, ranged and the altitude problem
Aion 2's flight is not just travel. The official store page describes the game as an MMORPG built around aerial combat and vertical positioning. In practice, that means every class has to think about altitude, camera angle and how to re-engage after being knocked out of position.
Melee classes feel this most. Gladiator and Assassin need to close distance, and a bad camera or a missed approach can turn a winning fight into a long fall. Ranged classes have more room to observe, but they still need to manage line of sight and vertical cover. Templar and Cleric are usually the anchor points of a group fight; if they lose the high ground, the party loses its safe space.
This is also why class choice should not be based only on damage. A class that fits your camera control and positioning habits will outperform a higher-ranked class you cannot play.
Faction and Brawler notes
Both factions — Elyos and Asmodians — can play all eight global classes. The class roster is not split by faction, so pick the faction your friends are on or the one whose story you prefer.
Brawler is the ninth class in Korea and Taiwan. It is not part of the global launch client. If you see Brawler in a tier list or a guide, check which region that guide is written for; the advice may not apply to the global version yet.
What changes after launch
Class balance will move. Damage numbers, cooldowns and survivability get patched, and a class that feels weak in one patch can become the obvious pick in the next. The role a class fills changes much more slowly. That is why the table above lists roles and weapons instead of a ranking.
If you want to keep up with changes, watch official patch notes first, then community class guides. Treat any tier list as a snapshot tied to a specific patch, not a permanent answer.
Common mistakes
- Choosing by tier list alone. A class you cannot position will lose to a lower-ranked class you understand.
- Ignoring group demand. Templar and Cleric are always in demand; damage classes compete for the same slots.
- Spreading early resources. Pick one weapon path and one gear direction before you invest in every slot.
- Assuming Brawler is available globally. It is not, unless the client you play has it.
- Picking a class for the story and expecting a free swap. The choice is permanent; make sure the role is one you actually enjoy.

FAQ
Which Aion 2 class is best for solo players?
Sorcerer and Ranger are the simplest solo picks because range lets you watch mechanics from a safe distance. Templar and Cleric are safer in groups but slower to kill alone.
Can I change class after choosing?
No. You start as an Adventurer and specialise into one class; treat the choice as permanent for that character.
Do the two factions have different classes?
No. All eight global-launch classes are available to both Elyos and Asmodians, and gender does not restrict class choice.
Is the Brawler class available at launch?
Not in the global client. Brawler is available in Korea and Taiwan; the global launch roster is the eight classes listed here.
Are tier lists useful for choosing a class?
Only as a snapshot. Balance patches move damage numbers, but the role a class fills — tank, healer, support or damage — changes much more slowly.
