Stronghold 4 is a return to the series' heart: a medieval castle-sim RTS where the castle is a working economy, not a backdrop. It is a narrative prequel to the original game, and it enters Early Access on 7 December 2026 with a 22-mission campaign, skirmish, and Free Build.
The castle is an economy
Walls and towers get the screenshots, but sieges are decided earlier: by taxes, food, and how happy your people are. The series has always been a management game wearing a war helmet — keep the books healthy and the military part becomes almost routine.
Weather is a mechanic, not a mood
The simulation layer extends to weather, which affects things like crops and archer range. That means a defensive plan that ignores the season is half a plan; build the same wall differently depending on what the sky is doing.
What Early Access ships with
A 22-mission narrative campaign for the structured player, skirmish against eight AI opponents for the repeat player, Free Build for the person who wants no objectives at all, and curated skirmish trails in between. If you only want multiplayer, waiting for 1.0 is the honest advice.
Customisation is the other game
Store material emphasises castle customisation — appearance as well as function. For most players this is where the long tail of playtime lives once the campaign is done: rebuilding the same stronghold until it looks the way you imagined.
