Frosthaven Guides: Classes, Combat & Outpost Tips

Frosthaven guide hub for the digital 1.0 — the six starting classes, how ability-card combat really works, outpost building, and 2–4 player co-op.

Verified for version1.0

Frosthaven is the digital adaptation of Isaac Childres's board game: a dark-fantasy tactical RPG where every fight is planned with ability cards rather than menus. You pick from a roster of highly specialised classes, grind out scenarios with a party, and rebuild an outpost between expeditions — the part that turns a series of fights into a campaign.

Combat is a card puzzle

Each turn you choose which cards to play, and the cards you do not play are the resource that keeps you alive: managing the discard pile well is the difference between a long scenario and an early exit. Because your options shrink as the fight continues, the opening rounds decide the endgame more than they look like they do.

Classes are roles, not flavours

The six starters — Banner Spear, Boneshaper, Drifter, Geminate, Blinkblade, Deathwalker — are built around genuinely different jobs, and more unlock as you progress. A party without a plan for damage, control and support will struggle regardless of player skill, so choose the second and third class to cover what the first one cannot do.

The outpost carries the campaign

Between scenarios you build up the outpost, and those buildings unlock mechanics rather than just numbers. Treat construction as part of your build plan: the upgrade you choose next shapes which scenarios are winnable.

Co-op notes

Two to four players online, and solo plays the same scenarios. In co-op, share the turn plan out loud — the card system punishes parties who each optimise privately and discover the conflict on the board.

The starter route covers class selection, the discard rhythm that keeps a scenario alive, and which outpost upgrades pay off first.

FAQ

Is Frosthaven out of Early Access?

Yes. The digital version left Early Access with its 1.0 release on 15 October 2026, after entering EA in mid-2025.

Which classes are available at the start?

The six starting classes are Banner Spear, Boneshaper, Drifter, Geminate, Blinkblade and Deathwalker. More unlock as the campaign progresses.

How many players can play co-op?

Two to four, per the store page, online. The campaign is also fully playable solo.

Do I need the board game to understand it?

No, but the combat language carries over — if you know the tabletop version, the card logic will feel familiar while the numbers may still differ.

How long is the campaign?

Expect a long one, as with the board game. There is no reliable published completion estimate for the digital version yet, so we do not quote a number.
