DQM: The Withered World — Getting Started & Demo Prep

How to start Dragon Quest Monsters — scout for synthesis stock, build a balanced team, and use the free demo to arrive at launch with a tested roster.

Verified for versionpre-release

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World releases on 3 December 2026, and a free demo is already available. That combination is a gift: you can learn the series' two core verbs — scouting and synthesis — before the full game asks you to rely on them.

Get ready in order

  1. Learn scouting as a resource decision, not a collection. Every monster you recruit is either a team member or synthesis stock; decide which before you invest in it.
  2. Protect a few monsters as breeding stock. The best long-term return usually comes from what you keep unfielded, not from what carries you through the next area.
  3. Synthesise rather than over-level. Combining monsters is how the series expects you to raise your ceiling; grinding levels into material you will fuse is work done twice.
  4. Build the team around its holes. Damage coverage, healing and status answers — check that your party can respond to more than one kind of threat.
  5. Play the demo to the Witherwood portion properly. G- and F-rank monsters carry into the full game, so a little care now becomes a head start later.
  6. Try the online modes early. Battles and tournaments are listed features; seeing what other players field teaches you which syntheses are worth chasing.
  7. Note the Digital Deluxe timing if you buy it. It includes roughly 48 hours of early play from about 1 December 2026, 09:00 PST — useful only if you will actually play that weekend.

What "good" looks like at launch

You do not need a perfect monster; you need a team without a hole and a stock of material ready to make something better. That is the state the demo is designed to leave you in — arrive at release with it.

FAQ

Should I level up or synthesise first?

Synthesise. Levelling a monster you will fuse away is time spent twice; keep your field team functional and your best stock ready for synthesis.

What carries from the demo?

Progress up to the Witherwood portion, plus G- and F-rank monsters, with the store's rules applying. That makes the demo worth playing carefully rather than speedrunning.

How do I build a team that does not have holes?

Cover what your current monsters cannot handle — damage types, healing, and status answers. The team, not one monster, is what fights.
